Stats highlights from the first session of the third day’s play between India and Australia in Adelaide.

36 The lowest completed innings for India in their history of 543 Tests. The previous lowest for them was 42 against England at Lord’s in 1974. It is also the joint lowest Australia have dismissed an opponent – they dismissed South Africa for 36 at the MCG in 1931-32.

Zero Totals lower than India’s 36 in the current century – the previous lowest being Ireland’s 38 all-out against England at Lord’s last year. India’s previous lowest total in this century was 76 against South Africa in Ahmedabad in 2008.

2 This was only the second instance of all 11 batsmen of a side failing to reach the double figures in the history of Test cricket – the highest being Mayank Agarwal’s nine. The previous instance was when England dismissed South Africa for 30 with the highest being Herbie Taylor’s seven, though there were 11 extras in the innings.

2008 The only other calendar year in which Virat Kohli has failed to reach three-figures in international cricket. Kohli batted in 24 innings across formats in 2020 – six in Tests and nine each in ODIs and T20Is – with a highest of 89. In his debut calendar year in 2008, he played just five ODIs with a highest of 54.

31 Tests taken by Pat Cummins to reach 150 wickets – the joint-second quickest among Australian bowlers alongside Dennis Lillee, Shane Warne, and Stuart MacGill. The only Australian to reach the milestone quicker was Clarrie Grimmett who took only 28 Tests.

1 This was the first time in 26 Tests India have lost a Test when Virat Kohli has won the toss. In the 25 previous Tests, India went on to win 21 with four ending as draws.

2 This Test was only the second time in 15 day-night Tests the team which conceded the first innings lead ended up as winners. The other instance came in Bridgetown in 2018 when Sri Lanka beat West Indies. It was the only time in their eight Tests that Australia failed to secure a first innings lead after having taken leads of leads of 22, 124, 287, 215, 179, 287 & 250 in their seven previous attempts.

35 This was the 35th time India have lost the opening Test of a series outside Asia (two or more Tests). India ended up losing 31 of the previous 34 such rubbers with three ending in 1-1 stalemate – in Australia in 1980/81, in England in 2002 and in South Africa in 2010/11.
